15 Ways for Homeowners to Conserve Resources TodayUNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Within this next week, both Earth Day and Arbor Day will remind us about the importance of taking care of the world around us. This week, I cannot help but be reminded of the first story that I heard about environmental responsibility, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.

Way before his time, Dr. Seuss confronted us with the importance of planting trees and conserving resources. The Lorax’s story evokes the thought that one small seed or one small action can be all it takes to create change.

Today, we would like to share with you 15 ways that everyday homeowners can conserve resources around the home.

15 Ways to Conserve Resources at Home

  1. Take short showers. Hubpages reported that one person could save 150 gallons of water each month just by shortening their showers by a few minutes.
  2. Turn off your computers when you got to bed.
  3. The City of Novi encourages people to choose fresh foods over frozen because “Frozen foods require 10 times more energy to produce”.
  4. Recycle. Not sure what to recycle? Check out the list at Recycle More.
  5. Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient ones.
  6. Soak your dishes after dinner instead of cleaning them with running water.
  7. Use cold water to wash clothes.
  8. Another tip from the City of Novi is to keep your tires inflated to help with better gas mileage.
  9. Weatherize your home. For Novi residents looking for information of weatherizing, visit our article, City of Novi, Mi Offers Help to Homeowners.
  10. Did you know that your soil loves compost? Leftover food and yard waste makes up almost a third of what is needed to compost. For more information on composting, check out the EPA’s Composting At Home.
  11. Only run your dishwasher when it’s full.
  12. This summer, set your thermostat two degrees higher than you normally would.
  13. In the winter, set your thermostat two degrees lower than you normally would.
  14. Water your lawn at dawn because watering during midday will cause the highest amount of evaporating.
  15. When boiling vegetables, use only enough water to cover them.

Why Conserve Natural Resources?

The City of Novi Michigan has been leading the way in “Going Green” and demonstrating the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. This spring, the City of Novi produced and published an article called, You Help Keep Novi Green.

This article not only provides additional ways to conserve natural resources at home, but also provides the information about why we should in the first place. It discusses green house effects, air pollution, the damage to the ozone layer, and water pollution as well as water consumption.
