Novi, MI Upcoming Events May 2017

Novi, Michigan has a number of upcoming family-friendly events that you won't want to miss. From the Novi Spring Palooza to the Memorial Day Parade, be sure to mark your calendar.

 Novi Spring Palooza

  • Friday, May 19, 2017
  • Time: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm  
  • Location: 45175 10 Mile Road, Novi MI 48375 US

Novi will be bustling with activity on Friday, May 19 at the Novi’s Spring Palooza located at the civic center campus. Formerly known as Spring into Novi, this is a fun event for all ages with lots of different activities. It’s a great way to get your kids involved in the community and to learn how this community is run.

This carnival-themed community party allows the community to interact with the people who work behind the scenes. How would your child like to climb inside a police car and fire truck? Or try on police or firefighter gear?

Clowns and live magicians will be strolling the grounds, performing. There will also be bounce houses, lawn games, laser tag, paintball, bubble soccer, corn hole games, bike races, and other carnival games to provide tons of entertainment. Hot dogs, chips, pizza, and other concessions will be available.

Live entertainment includes the DIA Mobile and Novi Concert Band. You will be able to finish your evening by staying to watch Disney’s Moana movie on the lawn starting at 8:30! In the event of bad weather, the Spring Palooza will be moved indoors to the civic center.

Novi Memorial Day Run

It’s hard to believe Memorial Day is right around the corner, but it’s time to make your plans. If you’re in town, why not plan to run your first 5K or 10K?

Even if this would be your 100th race, it’s a great cause. Proceeds benefit local charities and Novi Park Foundation youth program. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Returning runners will save $5. Bring a canned food item and save $5 as well. Veterans always save $5.

There were more than 900 runners in 2016. Plan to come this year, feel the excitement, and run to benefit your community. You will receive a free t-shirt and a medal just for registering.

The Memorial Day parade is right afterward, so you can continue feeling great and celebrating our country’s veterans.

The 10K starts at 8 a.m., the 5K starts at 8:15 a.m., and the mile fun run starts at 9 a.m. This run is for all ages!

Come one and all to join in the fun and be a part of the Memorial Day Parade. It’s as easy as buying some red, white, and blue crepe paper or streamers and decorating your bike! This is a fun and easy way to introduce the ideas of service and sacrifice to your kids and they get to be in a parade!

If you are part of a Novi organization - a business, a band, scout troop or even a family, the City of Novi encourages you to join in and march in the parade. The parade is a big part of Novi community spirit. It is a place to showcase your talents and to celebrate our veterans, those currently serving in the military, and those who have paid the highest price for our country.

Outdoor farmers’ markets are back in Northville! Come taste and see the beginning of summer every Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from May 4 through October 26, 2017.

The market is located on the corner of 7 Mile Road and Sheldon, across from Northville Downs.

The Northville Farmers’ Market brings something for everyone. If you are a local foodie, or just love fresh food, come buy Michigan-grown fresh produce and meat. This is a great way to meet the people who produce the food and get to know some of your local farmers.

In Michigan, we grow almost everything and export it to the rest of the country. Save yourself a trip to the grocery store, support independent businesses, and experience the deliciousness Michigan has to offer.

Northville Spring Carnival 2017

It’s that time of year again! You know if your kids get one peek at the carnival coming to town, they will want to go.

Elliott’s Amusements, out of Mason, Michigan offers the whole package: carnival food you remember from your own childhood - spicy sausage and peppers, elephant ears, funnel cake, deep fried snickers bars, and much more - plus games that are designed with the customer in mind.

This is a great place to take younger children who love to earn prizes. Many of the games offer a quality prize each time your child plays or allow the children to play until they earn a prize. There will be no tears of disappoint at this carnival!

The rides are the most exciting part for the kids - young and old! There will be many rides in one small place - 12 rides for kids including a super slide, bounce houses, and kiddie roller coaster. Farm Camp at Maybury Farm in Northville, MI

Are you looking for new and exciting hands-on fun for your children this summer?

If you are like many parents, the summer months can drag on without something for your kids to do. You may also want your kids to have the benefit of the summer weather.

Look no further than Maybury Farm Camp in Northville, Michigan! This is a total hands-on experience at a real farm with real farm animals and chores.

Your child will get a chance to pet, groom, feed, and walk the farm animals while learning about their needs and how to take care of them from experts. They will also get a chance to dig in the dirt and watch the vegetables grow while they help in the Farm Garden.

In addition, there is hiking in the woods every day in Maybury’s acres of forest trails. Your kids will experience team building games - and not the hand-held kind!

This is your chance to give your kids a chance to form tangible connections with the natural world. From spending time in the forest and face to face with friends to experiencing first-hand how gardens are grown and how farm animals are cared for.

Maybury Farm Garden

There will also be plenty of plain old fun: crafts, games, and other farm fun will be a regular part of this camp experience. Sign up your animal or nature lover - or give your child a chance to become one.

This camp runs from June 20 through August 17 and is designed for children ages 5-12. Farm camp runs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday through those weeks from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except for the week of July 4th. The cost is $175 per 3-day week and space is limited, so sign up soon!

About Maybury Farm

Maybury Farm is part of Maybury State Park. The entrance is located 1 ¼ mile west of Beck Road on 8 Mile, or ½ mile west of the Maybury State Park entrance. For parking by Maybury Farm, do not enter at Maybury State Park.

The farm is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is a program of the Northville Community Foundation. Additionally, the Farm receives no tax dollars. It relies on the generous support of the community from donations, grants, admission fees, and volunteers.

Maybury Farm’s goal is to connect children and adults to nature, community, animals, and agriculture in a hands-on way.

We might be ushering in more rainy weather, but the temperatures are rising and the flowers are beginning to burst forth. Easter is right around the corner! Are you looking for something to do with your little ones?

Here’s a little guide to help you find that egg hunt for the kids in Northville, Novi, and South Lyon, Michigan.

Northville, MI Easter Egg Hunt: Maybury Farm Annual Eggstravaganza Easter Egg Hunt

Here is another option for your Easter weekend at Maybury Farm in Northville, MI. Bring your little ones to see all the farm animals and exhibits and meet the Easter Bunny. But that’s not all! Give your kids a chance to meet Smokey the Bear, the Tooth Fairy, and Candy Cops!

South Lyon’s Easter festivities will begin at 11:00 am on April 15. Your children will be able to see emergency vehicles from the South Lyon Fire Department, the South Lyon Police Department, and the Lyon Township Fire Department. The Oakland County Sheriff will also be in attendance as well at the Easter Bunny!

Easter Egg Scrambles will begin at 12:00 pm according to age groups from youngest to oldest. Children from surrounding communities are welcome as well.

Novi Half Marathon

Have you always wanted to get in shape or maybe run that 5k for the first time? Maybe you’re an experienced runner, but you’ve never yet run a longer race. Are you ready for that half marathon? What a great way to enjoy spring, raise money for a good cause and motivate yourself to stay in shape.

This race is a four-in-one: the Half Marathon, 10K, 5K and 1 Mile (for the kiddos). It’s a lovely flat and scenic course by “Island Lake,” on country roads and by gorgeous horse farms. Races begin and end at Novi Middle School. Packet pick-up and sponsor expo happens the day before, along with late registration.

You’ll get a short-sleeved Tech t-shirt and Half Marathon and 10K participants will each receive medals for finishing and the Half Marathoners get finisher sticker decals as well. There will also be age-group awards for the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K events - for those of you out there who are extra competitive. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Novi Parks Foundation and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

Making Maple Syrup Tours at Maybury Farm in Northville, MI

Maple syrup tours at Maybury Farm

Do you remember the first time you tasted real maple syrup? There was nothing else that tasted like it, was there? It is sweet and dusky with a hint of the caramelization it goes through to thicken it.

You may associate pure maple syrup with the American pioneers. There are several chapters in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series devoted to making maple syrup and maple sugar from the sap of sugar maple trees. Or, you may remember being taken on a tour of a maple syrup farm and seeing the sap drip from the little taps in the trees into buckets on hundreds of maple trees.

Even in the cold, it is fascinating to see how this simple process hasn’t changed for hundreds of years. You may even remember the huge cast-iron kettle hung on chains over a big fire, boiling the sap into syrup.

Maybury Farm in Northville, Michigan offers a glimpse of bygone days for all ages with its maple syrup tours through March. Of course, if you know anything about tapping for maple syrup, you’ll know that it depends on warm weather during the days.

The sap doesn’t run through the trees if the weather is too cold. For most years, early spring is the perfect maple syrup weather. The sap runs in the trees during the warmer days and slows down in the cold nights. However, if the days are too cold, these tours are subject to change.

All tours begin with a wagon ride out to the Sugar Bush section of Maybury State Park. It is recommended that you arrive early to ensure your spot, as this can be a popular attraction. Groups of 15 or more can register in advance for a tour.

A short hike into the woods will reveal the sugar maples and your tour guide will tell you all about how they grow, why their sap is good for maple syrup, and how they are tapped and how the sap is collected.

Then take another wagon ride to the Sugar Shack to watch the sap being converted into syrup and learn how the maple syrup is graded. You can even get some tutorials for making your own maple syrup at home.

Warm up afterward by the wood-burning stove at the Maybury Farm Welcome Center with hot drinks and snacks. Here you can buy some of the maple syrup you saw being made and snag a few recipes to complement your syrup at home.

The cost is $7 per person. Children 2 and under are free, although they have to ride on the lap of an adult in the wagon. If you have a group of 15 or more paid admissions, you can schedule a tour for a day other than Saturday or Sunday. Call (248) 374-0200 to book your private Maple Syrup tour!

This is a perfect opportunity for families to experience nature, learn about trees, and do something out of the ordinary. Your kids will be fascinated with this process and remember it for years to come!

Northville and Novi have some exciting things lined up for March. There are events for all ages, including a mother son dance, a local business showcase, a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon for retirees, and much more!

Northville Business Showcase

The Northville Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating some of the thousands of Michigan made products and local businesses at the Northville Business Showcase. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the door. The event will showcase more than 70 different businesses and professionals.

In addition to the showcase, there will be special events, including giveaways, raffle prizes, and samples including food samples from local restaurants and coupons.

Chucks and Tux Mother Son Dance

The Chucks and Tux Mother Son Dance is a great opportunity for bonding time with a special lady in your son’s life with appetizers, music, photos, desserts, interactive dances and more.

You can order a City of Novi tuxedo t-shirt ahead of time for $5. The price per person is $14 for residents and $17 for non residents. Don’t miss the chance to dance, have fun with and dote on your (young) man and register online.

Come be Irish for an afternoon and celebrate St. Paddy’s Day! This event is for retirees, age 55 and older. This is a program celebrating all things Irish, with a traditional Irish meal, Celtic traditional tunes, and friends. This event is sponsored in partnership with Maple Manor.

Civilian Pistol (CPL) Safety

  • Date: Saturday, March 25
  • Time: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Novi Police Training Center

Have you been considering owning a handgun or already have one, but want to carry it with you? This class is all you need to obtain a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL).

This will be a full safety classroom training and shooting training that fulfills the requirement and helps equip you to safely carry a handgun on your person. You must be 21 years or older and you do not have to be a Novi resident to attend.

Registration forms are available at the Novi police department or online at CPL Class Registration Form.  Return the completed form with the fee of $150.00.

Please be advised that class size is limited and all participants will be subject to a criminal background check. In addition, students must bring their own:

  • Personal hand gun (weapons will not be provided)
  • 100 rounds of ammunition
  • Safety Glasses
  • Shooter’s earmuffs or ear plugs
  • Pen or pencil
  • Baseball Cap
  • Loose comfortable clothing appropriate for range

Brightmont Academy Open House

Come check out Brightmont! If you are new to the area, or are looking for school options for your kids, this open house is a great way to get familiar with what the area has to offer. Brightmont Academy is an accredited private school for grades 6-12. It offers one-to-one instruction for students with many kinds of learning challenges. Come get a tour and meet campus director Teresa Woods, who is on campus to talk about the one-to-one teaching model.

Brightmont offers diploma programs and individual courses designed to earn credit toward a diploma from another local high school. It also offers tutoring for grades 3-12, test prep courses, and career planning advice.

Brightmont has 11 locations all over the country - including two in Michigan. It has served 3,500 students since 1999. The academy accepts applications all year and receives new students in educational programs at any time.

Novi Police and Fire Victory Benefit

On Friday, January 20, there’s a sure-to-be-entertaining hockey benefit game: Novi Police and Fire Benevolent Association vs. Detroit Redwing Alumni Association. Come watch former Redwings play! Admission is $10, and the game starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Novi Ice Arena.

Chili Chilly Softball Showdown

Today is the last day to register your team, so don’t waste any time! This is the city’s 3rd annual event of this name. It will take place, Saturday, January 21 at 9 a.m. at Ella Mae Power Park. It’s a co-ed event featuring one pitch per at bat and prizes for all participants and lunch: koney dogs from Kerby’s Koney Island. Eighteen years and older!

It’s a double elimination format with six inning games and the Novi Civic Center will be open for players needing to warm up. Wooden bats provided. You can register your team or be put on a free agent list. The cost is $250 per team.

Alice in Wonderland Jr. Auditions

The Novi Civic Theatre program has been putting on plays, musicals, dinner theatres, camps, classes, and workshops for a long time. This is a great way for young actors to learn about and experience theatre starting at a local level. This spring, the Novi Civic Theatre program is putting on a youth musical theatre production of Alice in Wonderland Jr.

Rehearsals will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and also Saturday mornings, and a more precise schedule will be available after casting. A mandatory parent meeting will take place on January 30 for parents of those in the cast. The performances are scheduled for March 24-26 at the Novi Civic Center.

Auditions for grades K-8 will be held on January 21, 12-5pm at the Novi Civic Center. You may pre-register your child(ren) at no cost at: In the Mitten Productions.

  • Residents: $150
  • Non- Residents: $180

The price includes most costume pieces, scripts, music, cast photo, and cast t-shirt.
