How to Find Your Dream Neighborhood

Does the spring time weather have you thinking that it’s a good time to move?

What makes a neighborhood great?

The snow has melted in Novi, Michigan, and suddenly there are open house signs popping up all over. With the warmer weather finally here and the housing market continuing to climb, many people are looking to purchase that dream home in their dream neighborhood.

What makes a dream neighborhood? When picking where to live, what should you be looking for? Today, we would like to share with you a few ways to find the perfect neighborhood.

One of the First Questions You Need To Ask Yourself

Before you start examining different neighborhoods, it would be helpful to ask yourself where you see yourself in five or ten years. In 10 years, will you have a family? Will a long commute take away from the desirable aspects of a potential neighborhood?

Once you can picture yourself in the future, even if it is a little blurry, you will have a good sense of direction.

Every parent wants to give their children the most this world has to offer and that includes a great education. If children are in your 10 year future plan, a great place to start looking for a great neighborhood is in the communities that have great schools.

A good example of a community with great schools is Northville, Michigan. Northville’s school district was included on the 2013 AP District of The Year Honor Roll. You can read more about that in our article, Northville Public Schools Named to 2013 AP District of the Year Honor Roll.

Neighborhood Amenities

First, ask yourself what amenities are important to you in an ideal neighborhood. Examples of questions you might like to consider include:

  • Would you like to be able to walk to the local shops or restaurants?
  • How important is it to you to have an active downtown?
  • Are local parks an essential feature for your growing family?

Then, take a good look into the neighborhoods that have what you are looking for. A good city to start with would be Novi, Michigan. This particular city in Michigan was voted 2nd best city in Michigan by the Movoto Blog and 5th best city for young families by NerdWallet.

Another piece to look at when considering neighborhoods to look at is whether or not the community is truly affordable. One way that this is often figured out is by taking the median home value and monthly housing costs like mortgage, taxes and insurance and scoring each potential neighborhood by lowest scores. A lower score indicates a more affordable city.

Low Crime

Our last recommendation is to check out the crime rate of the neighborhoods that you are interested in. Both Northville and Novi, Michigan are known for having low crime.
