Leap year only occurs every four years. It is a year when we add one more day in the calendar to give us 366 days instead of 365. This extra day is added to the end of February on the 29th.

The History Behind Leap Year

Have you ever wondered what is behind the reasoning for this extra day? The history dates back many years. The sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete orbiting around the sun. The Roman calendar tried to adapt the extra .2422 by having a calendar that consisted of a 355 days and they added an extra 22-day month every two years to keep the calendars in sync with the earth and its seasons.

When Julius Caesar became emperor, he wanted to find a better way. It was his astronomer, Sosigenes that came up with the idea of adding an extra day every four years to February.

However, it was Pope Gregory XIII’s astronomers that decided to lose three days every 400 years to accommodate for the fact that the earth’s year is not exactly 365.25 days long. While this system will work, it might have to be rethought in 10,000 years. For now, it is the Gregorian calendar from 1582 that we still use which gives us this extra day every four years.

Now that we have covered the history about leap year, let’s talk about celebrating. When a day only exists once every four years, it is certainly a day to celebrate.
