Christmas has come and gone. While many people like to keep their Christmas trees up until after the holidays, your tree may be looking a bit sad. Now that it is New Year’s Eve, you may be wondering, What am I going to do with this Christmas tree?

It can be hard to part with your Christmas tree especially when it has brought so much joy into your home. Instead of throwing out all those memories, the cities of Northville and Novi, Michigan both offer options to recycle your Christmas tree.

Christmas Tree Disposal Options

Please make sure to check which options below are best for you. The city of Northville, Michigan even offers a Christmas tree pick up service.

The City of Northville’s Christmas Tree Pick Up Service

According to the City of Northville, between now and through the end of January, the city offers a Christmas tree pick up service. They do ask you to place your tree 10 feet from your “rubbish”. The city asks that you put your tree and your “rubbish” out of the curb by 7 am on your scheduled pick up date.

Oakland County Parks and Recreation Christmas Tree Recycling

The Oakland County Parks and Recreation offers a free Christmas tree recycling program that runs from December 26th 2013 until January 20th, 2014. You may drop off your tree anytime from 9 am – 4 pm any day of the week. There are 11 different locations to choose from. The following are the locations as reported by Destination Oakland,

  • Addison Oaks Park/Day Use
  • Catalpa Oaks
  • Glen Oaks Golf Course *Closest Self-Serve Christmas tree recycling site.
  • Groveland Oaks Park/Day Use
  • Independence Oaks Park: *Will accept trees until February 3rd, 2014
  • Lyon Oaks Park/Day Use: *Closest Self-Serve Christmas tree recycling site.
  • Oakland County Market
  • Orion Oaks Park/Day Use: *Will accept trees until February 3rd, 2014
  • Red Oaks Golf Course
  • Springfield Oaks Park/Activity Center
  • White Lake Oaks Golf Course

Destination Oakland has the following requirements for recycling Christmas trees:

    “All decorations, plastic, tinsel and wire must be removed. Large quantities from commercial lots will not be accepted.”

Christmas trees will go through the park’s system processes and turned into wood chips and compost. The woodchips and compost will be free to all at Orion Oaks on selected days.
